Who We Are

University
of Illinois Extension

University of Illinois Extension serves an outreach mission for the University of Illinois, offering educational programs to residents throughout Illinois. As part of the nationwide Cooperative Extension System, U of I Extension draws on research-based expertise from the University and other land-grant universities from across the country.

Through learning partnerships that put knowledge to work, U of I Extension’s programs are aimed at making life better, healthier, safer and more profitable for individuals and their communities.  U of I Extension offers educational programs in areas such as:

  • Community and Economic Development
  • Nutrition, Family and Consumer Life
  • Youth Development
  • Agriculture, Natural Resources and Horticulture

While most Extension programs are offered on an informal, non-credit basis, U of I Extension does offer continuing education credits in some fields of study. Illinois residents access Extension programs through a variety of formats including face-to-face workshops, distant learning, conferences, and more. Communities are directly served by Extension staff in 77 unit offices and 12 centers located throughout Illinois with support from state and campus based specialists.

The Abraham Lincoln Center for Character Development

The Abraham Lincoln Center for Character Development was founded on Lincoln’s birthday, February 12, 2003 as a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to provide character development training, measurement and evaluation services and community coalition-building support to families, schools, businesses, communities and other organizations throughout the state of Illinois and beyond. The Lincoln Center, as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, is an outgrowth of Healthy DuPage and its Character Development Coalition. This Coalition was formed in November 2000 to provide a forum for community representatives to meet on a monthly basis to share ideas and work together in DuPage County to foster character development in youth. Over the years the focus has expanded to working with whole communities to develop the social capital of the next generation.

In the spring of 2005, the topic of character in business generated tremendous interest at two monthly meetings of the DuPage Character Development Coalition. This interest led to the formation of a Business Committee, who initiated the discussions that lead to the Character@Work program. As a member of that Committee, University of Illinois Extension offered to collaborate with The Lincoln Center to develop the program.
